Introduction to The Long Hidden Friend

In 1820, the mysterious German-speaking migrant John George Hohman scraped together what little he had to publish a remarkable collection of material from European occult circles and traditional folk knowledge: Der lange verborgene Freund. Later translated into English as The Long Hidden Friend or The Long Lost Friend (among other names), Hohman's book was embraced by generations of audiences as far afield as southern Appalachia and among practitioners of Hoodoo. This gorgeous publication features the classic critical English edition of the text by philologist Carleton F. Brown (Journal of American Folk-Lore) alongside a new introduction by folklorist Ceallaigh S. MacCath-Moran and reproductions of incredible Pennsylvania German folk art by Kevin Alexandrowicz.
